Common HVAC Questions

How often should I change my air filter?

Most filters should be changed every 1-3 months. If you have pets, allergies, or run your system heavily, check it monthly and replace it as soon as it looks dirty.

How often does my HVAC system need professional maintenance?

Twice a year is ideal: once in spring for your air conditioner, and once in fall for your furnace or heat pump. Regular tune-ups catch small issues before they become costly repairs.

How long should my HVAC system last?

With regular maintenance, furnaces typically last 15-20 years, while air conditioners and heat pumps last 10-15 years. Lack of maintenance can shorten that significantly.

What size AC or furnace do I need for my home?

The right size depends on square footage, insulation, windows, and climate, not just a rule of thumb. A proper load calculation ensures your system isn’t too big or too small. Bigger isn’t always better.

Should I repair or replace my system?

If a repair costs more than 50% of a new system, or your equipment is nearing the end of its expected lifespan, replacement is usually the more cost-effective choice.

What does SEER rating mean?

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. The higher the SEER rating, the more efficiently your system cools your home, which means lower energy bills.

Why is my energy bill suddenly so high?

A spike in your energy bill can point to an aging or inefficient system, dirty filters, leaky ductwork, or a system that’s the wrong size for your home. A quick inspection can usually pinpoint the cause.

Do I need my air ducts cleaned?

Duct cleaning isn’t always necessary every year, but it’s worth considering if you notice visible dust, mold, pests, or if you’ve recently completed a renovation.
