The federal Section 25C tax credit (up to $2,000 for a qualifying heat pump) expired December 31, 2025, and no longer applies to equipment installed in 2026. The HEEHRA rebate program has also closed to new applications in California. If you’re researching a "federal tax credit for heat pumps," that credit is currently unavailable — local utility and regional rebates below are the active savings paths for 2026.
The one exception is geothermal (ground-source) heat pumps, which still qualify for a 30% federal credit through 2032 under Section 25D.
Current Rebates by County
Your local clean-energy provider offers direct rebates on qualifying heat pump and hydronic systems — independent of the federal programs above.
Sonoma Clean Power (SCP)
- $1,000 rebate for a qualifying heat pump heating & cooling system
- Up to $1,700 for a qualifying hydronic system
- CARE/FERA customers: up to 50% of remaining project cost, up to $10,000
- Free furnace repair/replacement available for income-qualified households via LIHEAP and Weatherization Assistance
- Need help with your energy bill? SCP’s Financial Assistance program offers additional bill and cost-saving support for qualifying households
MCE (Marin Clean Energy)
- Heat pump HVAC: rebate paid per ton of installed capacity, plus a $2,000 bonus (typical single-family example: ~$3,200 total)
- Heat pump water heater: up to $3,175
- Must use an MCE participating contractor and have lived in the home 12+ months
- Multifamily/commercial electrification: up to $6,000 per unit
Bay Area Air District — Clean HEET
- $3,000–$9,500 to replace a wood-burning stove, fireplace, or insert with an electric heat pump
- Application window is currently open — apply before the deadline
- Covers Sonoma, Marin, and Napa counties, along with the rest of the Bay Area
Time-Sensitive: Clean HEET Deadline
The Bay Area Air District’s Clean HEET program (wood stove-to-heat-pump replacement, up to $9,500) has an application deadline. Confirm the current deadline on the Air District’s site before starting your project, and call us early — permitting and installation both take time.
